Glassing attacks force pubs and clubs switch to plastic cups

Post by shammy on Sun Dec 07, 2008 9:15 am

A NIGHT out at a Brisbane RSL club cost Luke Knight far more than he expected.
The 22-year-old electrician lost the sight in his right eye after a club patron threw a glass into his face during a fight with two other people at Greenbank RSL Club on December 16 last year.

The glass shards pierced his retina and shattered his vision.

Mr Knight was one of 157 people admitted to Queensland hospitals after assaults involving glass in 2007-08.

There have been 24 glassing incidents on the Gold Coast in the past 12 months, according to Queensland Treasurer Andrew Fraser.

Mr Knight was in a group watching the fight when he was injured.

"I remember the glass hitting me in the face -- it just shattered," he said.

"A piece of glass went through my eyeball. It was the worst pain you could ever have. I still have nightmares."

Mr Knight had five hours of surgery, was in hospital a week and off work for two months.
