DR Congo rebels threaten to continue offensive

Post by shammy on Fri Oct 31, 2008 10:20 am

Rebels leading a four day offensive against government troops in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo are threatening to continue fighting unless the government agrees to negotiate.

Our Africa correspondent, Andrew Geoghegan, reports the rebel leader, General Laurent Nkunda, says he's fighting to protect his Tutsi community from attack by Hutu rebels, some of whom are accused of taking part in the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

He's demanding the Congolese Government deal with his concerns.

"Anytime we are ready to disarm if we have response to our requirements and our requirements are clear, our security, the security of the people," he said.

The rebels have declared a ceasefire for now, but that hasn't stopped a humanitarian crisis from growing.

Tens of thousands of people have fled their homes in fear of being caught in the fighting.

"O Allah remove the hardship, O Lord of mankind, grant cure for You are the Healer. There is no cure but from You, a cure which leaves no illness behind."
