The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'None but a noble man treats women in an honorable manner, and none but an ignoble treats women disgracefully. ' (Sunan At-Tirmidhî)

Melbourne workers flee city blast

Post by shammy on Thu Dec 06, 2007 1:09 pm

6th December,2007

Emergency services have evacuated up to 6000 people from buildings in Melbourne's city centre after a blast in the basement of an office block this afternoon.

Ambulance officers have treated 48 people, six of whom were taken to hospital, after the explosion in a substation at 570 Bourke Street.

Around 100 people were trapped in 14 lifts at a neighbouring building, 600 Bourke Street, when power supplies were cut due to the fire.

Most were freed within minutes of the first alarm at 12.31pm, but six people were trapped for more than an hour. The fire was extinguished by 1.40pm.

The explosion cut power to more than 240 customers in the surrounding area. Supplies have now been largely restored.
