The owner and the manager (his son) of the Casablanca-based mattress factory that went into flames on Saturday, killing 55 workers, have been formally charged on Tuesday by the General Prosecutor in the Casablanca.

The fire broke out in the first floor of the "Rosamor ameublements" factory in the industrial neighborhood of Lissasfa in Casablanca. Some hundred employees were trapped in the blaze, which spread fast to gut the four-floor building due to the presence of chemical products.

According to a press release of the General Prosecutor, investigations into the case have revealed that the blaze was caused by a cigarette butt that fell on flammable materials.

Lack of security and safety equipment necessary to preserve the lives of employees, unintentional manslaughter and injury, as well as failure to render assistance are among the charges the factory's owner and his son will be facing, the press release said ascribing the large number of victims to a series of violations of the labor Code and of urban planning provisions.
