Bombing prompts Afghan embassy review

15th January,2008

Security will be reviewed at the Australian embassy in the Afghan capital Kabul after Taliban extremists attacked the luxury hotel where the mission is housed.

Australians, including embassy staff, were unhurt in the suicide bombing at the five-star Serena Hotel which killed seven people and injured several others.

Officials are confident the embassy was not the target of the attack.

Amrullah Saleh, the head of Afghanistan's intelligence service, said three militants stormed the hotel. A guard shot and killed one attacker, which triggered his suicide vest.

A second attacker blew himself up near the hotel's entrance, and the third attacker made it inside the hotel and shot his way through the lobby and toward the gym, Saleh said.

The third attacker wearing a police uniform was eventually apprehended and arrested.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has promised a review of security for the embassy.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) says protection for the embassy is provided by a privately-contracted Australian-based security firm.

In the Iraqi capital Baghdad, the Australian Defence Force provides security for the Australian embassy, located in the international zone.

Mr Rudd has asked DFAT for an urgent assessment of its security needs in Afghanistan.
