The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'None but a noble man treats women in an honorable manner, and none but an ignoble treats women disgracefully. ' (Sunan At-Tirmidhî)

Digger's body returns home

Post by shammy on Mon Mar 23, 2009 12:43 pm

The body of the ninth Australian soldier to have been killed in Afghanistan has arrived home and been received by family and colleagues in a ceremony at RAAF Base Williamtown in Newcastle.

Corporal Mathew Hopkins was one of two Australian soldiers killed in Afghanistan last week. He was fatally wounded during a firefight with Taliban insurgents.

Corporal Hopkins was part of the 7th Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment and his colleagues formed a guard and bearer party on the tarmac and carried the casket to a private room.

Corporal Hopkins, 21, was a husband and new father who enjoyed only four days with his baby son before he was sent abroad.

He was based in Darwin but was raised in Brisbane.

The head of the Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston, extended his sympathy to Corporal Hopkins' wife, son, family and friends.

"We will keep the memory of Mathew in our hearts, and we will also continue to keep the many soldiers currently on deployment in our thoughts and prayers," he said.

"O Allah remove the hardship, O Lord of mankind, grant cure for You are the Healer. There is no cure but from You, a cure which leaves no illness behind."
