Oil slick probe: ship's captain surrenders passport

Post by shammy on Sun Mar 15, 2009 1:13 pm

Queensland authorities have begun action against the crew of container ship the Pacific Adventurer, which caused a massive oil spill along the state's south-east coast.

Sixty kilometres of beach was blanketed in oil after the ship leaked more than 200,000 litres when it was damaged in rough seas on Wednesday.

Maritime safety officers under police escort arrived at the Hamilton dock late this afternoon.

They boarded the ship and served legal papers on the captain.

He has been ordered to surrender his passport and remain on the ship for at least the next two weeks as authorities begin an investigation. The ship has also been detained.

Mick Carr from the Maritime Union of Australia says the move was expected.

"That comes as no surprise to me at all given the widespread nature of the spill," he said.

The ship's owner, Swire Shipping, had already confirmed the captain and crew would stay on the vessel in Brisbane for as long as required.
